Corian ActiveStop: Runner-Up Entry for 'Shape the Future Design Competition
About the Competition
Metropolis Magazine, October 2014: Announcing the winners of the "Shape the Future Design Competition.
In late 2014, Dupont, along with Metropolis Magazine launched the "Shape the Future Design Competition". The goal of the contest was to find creative ways of using and imagining Corian in the 21st century. Corian is the trademark solid surface material developed by Dupont.
As I began to design for my entry to the competition, I discovered and appreciated the material properties of Corian; It is durable, non-porous, repairable and has the added capacity to conduct light and electricity. At Milan Design Week 2014 Dupont showcased pieces of Corian paired with Powermat Technologies. The panels became wireless charging pads for objects (like phones) placed on top of them.
My entry to the competition, titled "Corian ActiveStop," received the Runner-Up award and featured alongside other winners in Metropolis Magazine. Here is an insight into the concept for Corian ActiveStop with images below
Corian ActiveStop
Corian ActiveStop is a transit stop created almost entirely with Corian.It's structural skeleton consists of metal framing clad with opaque Deep Color Corian while its central grid of panels is translucent Glacier White Corian. The translucent panels of Corian are backlit with LED's and images projected on them.
The grid of panels will change configuration regularly, sometimes serving as seating and sometimes as projection screens for news, public information or ticketing; Depending on the number of people at the stop at that moment, and the time of day.
Since the panels or screens are of a durable solid surface, not glass, they will be vandal-proof. Along with this, the outer ends of the stop will consist of flip-top wireless charging panels. While waiting for transit, people can use these panels easily to charge devices.
The entry received appreciation from judges for its inclusion of technology into the structure of Corian, its vandal-proof nature and its suitability for large-scale use.
